Orthotics

What is an orthotic?

An orthotic is a shoe insert that accommodates or corrects the way you walk or run to prevent or relieve pain.

You can buy some off-the-shelf ones or your podiatrist can create custom-made ones just for you.

Contrary to popular belief, orthotics are not purely there for arch support (though many people with flat feet do benefit from orthotics). A great orthotic should control your whole foot biomechanics in order to truly make a difference.

How to tell if you need orthotics

You might benefit from orthotics if you have:

  • Pain in your the heel, arch or ball of your foot
  • Pain in your knees, hips or lower back.

This pain may be traced back to a:

  • Collapsing medial arch (flat feet), straining structures under your foot and potentially all the way up to your hips.
  • Collapsing metatarsal arch (at the ball of your foot) – one common sign is callusing under the ball of your foot.
  • High medial arch, which can hinder shock absorption and strain the outside of your foot and your lower leg.
  • Leg length discrepancy – if one leg is slightly longer than the other, it will affect your hips and lower back.

Common injuries treated with orthotics

Orthotics can help to relieve pain relating to a number of conditions including:

Running orthotics may also be used to help with shock absorption, comfort and injury prevention.

How can orthotics help?

Orthotics help by

  • Correcting the position of your feet, preventing them from rolling inward or outward.
  • Providing additional support and cushioning in key areas like the heel or the ball of the foot.

Orthotic prescription at Hong Kong Foot Clinic

At Hong Kong Foot Clinic, our podiatrists are fully trained in biomechanical analysis and orthoses prescription. We can offer off-the-shelf orthotics or fully custom orthotics depending on your needs.

To create your orthotic prescription, we use video analysis and 3D scanning of your feet. We sent those electronic images to Australia’s premier orthotic lab which 3D-prints from your scan to ensure tailored orthotics that meet your needs.
